Disability Town Hall Series
Indiana Disability Town Hall Series
The Indiana Disability Town Hall Series is a statewide initiative hosted by the Indiana Statewide Independent Living Council (INSILC). Each calendar year, INSILC hosts four town halls in communities across Indiana to create meaningful opportunities for people with disabilities to connect directly with elected officials, local leaders, and community decision makers.
These events center the voices of people with disabilities and create space for open, respectful conversations about the issues that impact daily life, including healthcare, transportation, employment, housing, and access to community supports.
A Space for Voices, Questions, and Change
Disability Town Halls are designed to be welcoming, accessible, and community focused. Each event typically includes:
- Panel discussions with local and state leaders who respond directly to questions from community members
- Community conversations that encourage participants to share lived experiences, concerns, and ideas
- Community exhibitors offering local information, services, and resources for people with disabilities and their families
Informing Indiana’s State Plan for Independent Living
Feedback gathered at Disability Town Halls—including public comments, questions, and shared experiences—is collected and incorporated into Indiana’s State Plan for Independent Living. This statewide plan establishes priorities and goals for improving policies, services, and supports for people with disabilities throughout Indiana.
Town Hall input ensures that the plan reflects real-life experiences and is shaped by the people most impacted by disability policies.
What Is Independent Living?
Independent Living is a philosophy grounded in consumer choice and self-determination. It recognizes that people with disabilities are the experts in their own lives and should have the freedom and support to make decisions about where and how they live. Independent Living also emphasizes that people with disabilities should be fully integrated into community life, with equal access to housing, transportation, employment, civic engagement, and social opportunities. The Disability Town Hall Series supports these principles by elevating disabled voices and translating lived experience into meaningful change.
Join the Conversation
INSILC’s Disability Town Halls are free and open to the public and are held in different regions of the state to encourage broad participation. Accessibility supports such as ASL interpretation and CART services are provided, with additional accommodations available upon request.
Whether you are a person with a disability, a family member, advocate, service provider, or ally, your participation helps ensure that people with disabilities have a strong voice in shaping Indiana’s communities and future.
