Apply to Be an INSILC Council Member
Join INSILC and Help Shape Disability Advocacy in Indiana
INSILC (Indiana Statewide Independent Living Council) is a statewide nonprofit organization led by and for people with disabilities. Our Council Members bring a wide range of lived experiences and represent multiple different disabilities.
We believe that people with disabilities are the experts in their own lives. Guided by the Independent Living Philosophy, we work to ensure that people with disabilities have the same opportunities, choices, freedom, and full participation in their communities as everyone else.
INSILC serves as both a nonprofit organization and Indiana’s federally required Statewide Independent Living Council. To ensure that the disability community leads this work, the Council operates independently from state government and Indiana’s Centers for Independent Living.
Council Members are appointed by the Governor and serve three-year terms. We encourage people with disabilities from all backgrounds and experiences to apply. Whether you are a long-time advocate or are interested in becoming more involved in disability leadership, your voice and perspective matter.
We are looking for people who:
- Believe in disability rights, inclusion, and self-determination.
- Want to help improve opportunities for people with disabilities across Indiana.
- Are committed to learning, collaborating, and serving their disability community.
- Understand or are interested in the Independent Living Philosophy.
Applications are reviewed by INSILC’s Nominating Committee, which is selected by the Council and helps identify candidates for consideration. The committee recommends applicants for appointment, but all Council appointments are ultimately made at the Governor’s discretion. Submitting an application does not guarantee appointment; however, we encourage anyone who is passionate about advancing independent living and disability rights to apply.
We are committed to building a Council that reflects the diversity of Indiana’s disability community. While we have welcomed members from historically underrepresented communities in recent years, we know there are still voices missing from the table. We strongly encourage individuals from all disability communities, backgrounds, cultures, races, ethnicities, ages, genders, geographic areas, and life experiences to consider applying.
For questions about the process or Council responsibilities, or to request an accommodation or assistance with completing the application, please email Executive Director Mike Foddrill at MFoddrill@IndianaSILC.org or call 1-844-446-7452.
The Council meets quarterly on the second Wednesday of the month. In order to be considered at a public meeting, please submit your application at least 30 days in advance.
